Panel Discussion & Film Screening: The Battle of Algiers .

I'll be speaking on a panel after the screening at Midlands Arts Centre, 24 Sept 2018

It premiered in 1966 to immediate controversy in France for its unflinching portrayal of the country’s actions in decolonising Algeria. But thanks to its Ennio Morricone score, documentary stylings and black and white aesthetic, which enhance the moral greys of its narrative, Gillo Pontecorvo’s The Battle of Algiers is iconic cinema. This screening of the recently remastered print and score is presented as part of the BFI’s “Uprising: Spirit of ’68 season” with a panel of experts in moral philosophy, counter-terrorism, colonialism and 20th century film from Birmingham and Keele Universities giving context and explaining its ongoing resonance and power.
