This special section in Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa & the Middle East 39, no. 1 (May 2019) is dedicated to examining the history and culture of automobility, and features an introductory essay and a quartet of articles on Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Libya and Algeria, and Syria. The section examines the motor vehicle as a multifaceted and ambiguous site of social experience and analytical possibility across the twentieth century, one with implications for the wider conceptualisation of the Middle East and for our understanding of modern globality.
